Sucker Punch Sally’s Triumph

Triumph Thruxton
On Friday, Christian Clayton of Sucker Punch Sally’s passed away in his sleep, at the age of 40. His Arizona-based company was relatively young too: founded in 2002, it was renowned for building stripped-down, stylish bobbers and choppers. This Triumph Thruxton cafe racer was a collaboration with Fender Custom Guitars, and we first featured it in 2009. Back then, the distressed old school look was uncommon: the paint is by leading hot rod artist Sara Ray, who had relocated to become a permanent part of the SPS team.

Triumph Thruxton
The bike is an ’09 model Thruxton, and inspired by 1950s Isle of Man TT racers. The stock 865cc DOHC motor was not modified, but was given a custom exhaust system that terminates with slightly flared outlets reminiscent of a trumpet. The seat unit is completely new and the rear end was uprated with a pair of Öhlins shocks. HID bulbs are hidden in the headlight, which does double duty as a number plate. As a nice touch, the bolts on the headlight mounts are authentic Telecaster tuning keys.

For a different take on the same bike, check out this Triumph Thruxton from Mr Martini.

    Yes, it’s kinda … meaty.

My God that’s a brilliant bike. It looks 40 years old!

Just an FYI… Sarah Ray is not controlling the company’s artistic direction.
The Art Director, Kevin Carnes is the designer who has developed and continues to successfully brand SuckerPunch Sallys and their sister companies.

Stacey, my source was SPS’ own PR on this: Despite the sluggish economy, Sucker Punch Sally’s continues to expand and has hired Ray to help with the artistic direction of the company’s product lines … “They’ve given me the opportunity to create a visual entity of the company with absolute free reign and total conviction in my ideas and abilities.” I guess I read too much into ‘absolute free reign’!
