I'm a total DT1 enthusiast. Any information on this machine is always great to read, especially in the UK here, as we didn't get these machines until well into the mid 70s. It's ok to compare the DTs and RTs with the Euro stuff, but you have to remember that the Euro stuff was always more expensive and parts were difficult to get (even in Europe). For the price, there was nothing to beat the DT1, with spares back-up second to none. Thank you for this write up! Brilliant!

What a wonderful article !!!

I remember it all, because I was there.

I started riding dirt on a Honda 50 step-through ( not a dirt bike, but you
couldn't tell me that at the time ) and my very next bike was a Husky 360C
Enduro. Yeah, that was a bit of a jump between those two bikes, but I didn't
know I shouldn't have gone from the Honda directly to that Husky, so it all worked out ok. I look back on it and it's amazing I survived !

The Yamahas were everywhere. One buddy had a CT-1 ( 175 version )
another buddy had an AT-1 ( 125 version with electric start ) and another kid had a DT-1. I always thought the 175 was the best one, for real dirt riding.

Great history of the DT-1. Does anyone know what an original 1968 in running condition would fetch these days? If there were so many sold in the late 60's/early 70's, how hard is it to still find them around?

Terrific article Mitch! Ed Burke hired me for the short time I was at Yamaha International. I recently found an "early" 1968 DT1 listed on Craigslist in Spokane, Washington. The flickr website I attached to this message http://www.flickr.com/photos/48000856@N06/
chronicles my build of a "period" shorttracker.
Thanks for all the great memories and names from Yamaha past...
