Wesley Reyneke

Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Wesley Reyneke is the guy behind Rather Be Riding, a blog dedicated to the love of motorcycles and motorcycling.

Despite the fact that his father raced amateur off-road in the early 80s, Wes only started riding motorcycles in earnest 6 years ago (not counting the Honda Express he used to ride to class when he was 19)—and has been making up for lost time ever since. Starting out with a Vespa ET4, he quickly moved over to a BMW F650GS Dakar, clocking miles all over his native South Africa. A couple of dual-sport bikes later, and his love for customs, classics and “retros” developed. His current daily runner is a slightly modified ’84 BMW R100RT, and there’s a partially dismantled ’99 Kawasaki W650 in his garage, awaiting a makeover.

When he’s not busy trying to avoid his day job, he spends his free time running Rather Be Riding, riding his motorcycle, writing articles for Tread Magazine (a South African mountain biking publication), riding his mountain bike, playing with his kids or smacking his drum kit. And no, he’s nowhere near as serious as his mugshot would imply.

Rather Be Riding is currently experiencing a short hiatus. Until it relaunches, follow it on Facebook or Google+.

Take a look at a stock Honda NX650 Dominator, and it’s hard to believe how popular it’s become with custom builders. Lurking under all that bodywork is a pretty cool motorcycle though—a great all-rounder with legendary Honda reliability and loads of potential. Honda produced the… Read more »

Charlie Trelogan’s insightful piece on café racer design emphasized the importance of good lines. No one understands this concept more than Poland’s Eastern Spirit Garage: They helped build the Honda CX500 that Charlie used to illustrate his point. Now they’ve turned their keen eye to… Read more »

Our most recent Top 5 feature showed just how versatile Triumph’s Bonneville is as a custom platform. The venerable Bonny makes for as good a flat tracker as it does a café-racer–so it’s easy to forget what a fine looking motorcycle it actually is in… Read more »

We’ve already rounded up our favorite Triumph Scramblers and Thruxtons, but today we’re tackling the base model in Triumph’s modern classics line—the Bonneville. Styled after the Bonnies of the 60s and 70s, the ‘new’ Bonneville was released in 2001 and went on to form the… Read more »

Many builders cite similar reasons for taking up their craft, one of them being a growing dissatisfaction with modern motorcycle design. This, and an over-active imagination, led Simon Garcia to tear into his 1989 Honda NX650—and inject a little style and charm of his own.… Read more »

There’s no denying that BMW’s classic R-series models are enjoying the limelight at the moment. We’ve used the term ‘low-key’ to describe Ad Hoc’s David Gonzalez before. His latest release—an audacious Yamaha SR250—is anything but. We’ve waxed lyrical about Kawasaki’s W800 before, and how great it is as a custom platform. It’s simple, reliable and looks good straight off the showroom floor, with a gorgeous engine. Let’s be honest—Honda’s CX500 is not going to win any beauty contests. With a short wheelbase, high front end, awkward looking subframe and unflattering plastics, it earned nicknames such as ‘plastic maggot’ and güllepumpe (the German word for a pump used to shift liquid manure)… Read more »
