‘Earl Grey’: Urban Motor’s BMW R100 cafe racer

Urban Motor is a CR&S dealer in Berlin, Germany, but it doesn’t just sell new motorcycles.

The company has put together a lovely classic BMW cafe racer, using a 1983 R80 G/S as the base. ‘Earl Grey’ has been upgraded with a R100RS front fork, motor and driveline, putting a healthy 70hp at the rider’s disposal. (That figure might be higher, because a K&N filter and a 2-into-2 Hoske exhaust have also been fitted, along with the manifold from a R1100RT.)

The frame was cleaned up, de-tabbed, and cut down at the back—and then sandblasted and powdercoated black. Progressive fork springs and Wilbers shocks tighten up the handling. A new, simplified wiring harness is hooked up to a Motogadget rev-counter, a micro headlamp and Kellermann blinkers; other parts were supplied by Tarozzi and LSL.

The restoration took more than 400 hours of work, and after the BMW cafe racer was finished it was featured on the cover of the Spring 2011 issue of BMW Motorräder magazine. ‘This boxer beguiles and fascinates with its minimalism,’ said the report. Indeed.
