2006 Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200C by Purpose Built Moto

If this rugged, dirt-slinging V-twin looks familiar, it’s because you’ve likely seen it tearing across the Tasmanian wilderness on the big screen, or read our build feature on it a few years ago. Built by the renowned Australian workshop Purpose Built Moto, this 2006 Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200C was created explicitly to star in the motorcycle adventure film Wide of the Mark.

Serving as a foundational build during the garage's early rise to success, this Sportster was engineered to do the unthinkable: take a heavyweight American cruiser and transform it into a legitimate, terrain-conquering adventure bike. Now, Purpose Built Moto is offering it at auction to someone ready to add to its incredible story.

Engineered for the Outback

Turning a Sportster into a dual-sport requires far more than just a set of knobby tires. To give the bike proper ground clearance and suspension travel, Purpose Built Moto grafted on a set of rebuilt 2015 Triumph Tiger 1050 forks. Out back, the heavy stock swingarm was tossed in favor of a beautiful aluminum unit from Trac Dynamics (a $2,500 upgrade), paired with high-performance K-Tech Razor rear shocks. Rolling on custom 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy rims, this Sportster now has about 210 mm of clearance, fully loaded—just 60 mm shy of a Husqvarna 701 Enduro.

The braking system received a similar rethink, consisting of a premium ISR lever and rear master cylinder setup ($1,800 value) combined with a Performance Machine rear brake caliper. A custom bash plate protects the lower frame, while a 2-into-1 stainless steel exhaust ensures the 1200 cc Evo motor barks exactly like a Harley-Davidson off-roader should.

Every aspect of the Sporty was redesigned with the mission in mind. ProTaper Tracker bars, lengthened risers and reworked pegs provide more aggressive ergos, and the custom tracker-style tailpiece has an exo-skeleton with mounting points for a bag rack and a sissy bar. LED lighting, an on-board compressor and a lithium-ion battery are just a few of the other purposeful mechanical highlights.

Honest Battle Scars, Fresh Mechanicals

This Sportster was built to be thrashed—and it wears its history with pride. The bike is being auctioned in its original, unrestored condition from the film, proudly displaying the genuine battle scars it earned in the wild. However, mechanically, it is completely sorted and ready for its next owner. Following its cinematic adventures, the bike was thoroughly prepped: it breathes through a brand-new carburetor and air filter, wears fresh tires and features a replacement front wheel (the original having sacrificed itself to the Tasmanian trail).

With only 11,800 original kilometers [7,332 miles] on the clock—just under 3,000 of which were added after the build for the film—this is a rare opportunity to own a custom, fully documented and wildly capable Harley.

*Condition Report*

This Sportster has been used for its creator’s intended purpose and, as such, shows some wear and tear. Glamor shots from the time of the build’s completion are shown, but refer to photos (7-14 in the gallery) for a current look at the bike. Scrapes and dents are evident, but the bike has been mechanically sorted.

Additionally, some equipment has been changed from the original build specification, including (but not limited to) the Lectron carburetor and stainless air intake with DNA filter.
