Every week, the digital pages of Bike EXIF are graced by the world’s elite custom motorcycle builders. We marvel at the dark, geometric witchcraft of Winston Yeh at Rough Crafts, or the clinical, billet-aluminum perfection rolling out of the Powerbrick workshop in the Netherlands. These outfits operate in vast workspaces, with specialized machinery and a Rolodex of industrial partners that most grease-stained mortals can only dream of.
Yet, the true lifeblood of the custom scene doesn’t just pulse inside state-of-the-art facilities; it thrives in the quiet suburbs, backyards, and garden sheds of the global riding community. We love celebrating the home builder, visionaries like Mark van Veggel of Futuri Motion, who construct boundary-pushing machines out of modest workspaces.
It is into this honorable tier of amateur wrenching that Adam Vanhooser steps. Operating out of his home garage in Nashville, Tennessee, Adam took a 15-month plunge into the deep end to build his very first custom motorcycle. "I am not a professional builder nor have dreams of becoming one, but I love that the bike community is so welcoming and willing to let an amateur jump in and take a stab," Adam says.
The canvas for Adam’s maiden voyage was a 1997 BMW K 1100. Powered by a liquid-cooled, 1,092cc inline-four engine, the factory ‘Flying Brick’ turned out a healthy 100 horsepower and 107 Nm of torque through a five-speed gearbox. Long revered by long-distance tourers for a powertrain that routinely clears the 100,000-mile mark with little more than basic maintenance, these heavy Germans have become prime real estate for custom builders.
Part of their modern appeal lies in the economics. A running BMW K-Series can often be found on the used market for between $2,000 and $3,000, while abandoned or non-running projects can change hands for under $1,000. If your roadmap involves discarding almost every piece of factory plastic anyway, a budget-friendly donor is a logical place to start. Furthermore, the global aftermarket support for K-series bikes has skyrocketed, with specialized brands such as Powerbrick, Cognito Moto, and Marekswerk offering bolt-on engineering solutions that help home builders achieve professional-grade results.
Adam spent well over a year meticulously transforming the K 1100 from an overweight sport-tourer into a lean, usable café racer. The process began with a complete teardown. He split the engine and gearbox, replacing every single aged seal, gasket, and piece of hardware to ensure the legendary German reliability remained intact beneath the new look.
With the mechanical core refreshed, Adam addressed the engine’s breathing. The factory airbox was binned in favor of individual high-flow pod filters. A 4-into-1 stainless steel exhaust system, by Christian Gill, snakes tightly against the block before gathering into a single collector beneath the bottom-right flank of the machine.
To conquer the K-bike's notoriously challenging frame geometry, Adam utilized some of the best aftermarket components in the business. The factory subframe was cut away and replaced with a beautifully machined CNC aluminum subframe kit from Retrorides. To manage the single-sided shaft drive, a SideWinder Meccanica rear suspension kit was bolted up, instantly sharpening the motorcycle’s rear profile and providing much-needed negative space.
For the front end, Adam drew heavily on the Powerbrick catalog for an aggressive, in-family transplant. The entire front suspension was replaced with the inverted gold forks, Brembo brake calipers, master cylinder, and levers sourced from a modern BMW S 1000RR superbike. This high-performance conversion tracks straight thanks to Powerbrick's dedicated triple-tree and front-axle conversion kits. Clamped tightly to the gold fork tubes is a pair of low-slung, clip-on handlebars equipped with Motogadget bar-end mirrors. It’s an ergonomic setup that explicitly states this machine was built to go fast, not far.
One of the most critical elements of any K-series build is the tail section. In our opinion, too many projects suffer from a "floating seat" look, where the design simply stops dead behind the seat. To avoid this, Adam selected a rear fairing from ElectroMotorworks. The tail cowl flows seamlessly from the back of the tank, enveloping a custom seat pad stitched by Christian Gill and neatly encapsulating the rear lighting assembly for a finished, factory-prototype look.
The rolling stock consists of cast wheels borrowed from a BMW K 1200RS, wrapped in Pirelli rubber. To tie the entire visual package together, the wheels were finished in a deep Bronze Burst Sparkle powder coat, offering an elegant contrast to the main bodywork. The fuel tank and matching tail cowl were wrapped in a velvety, satin deep blue vinyl that perfectly complements the gold anodized finish on the S 1000RR front end.
The bike’s electrical system was completely modernized. The original, bulky wiring loom was replaced with a digital Motogadget m.unit blue controller, which serves as the machine's brain. A Motoscope Pro digital speedometer was integrated into the cockpit, providing the rider with all necessary readouts without cluttering the view over the top triple clamp.
There will always be purists who argue that an unkillable mile-muncher like the K 1100 should never be stripped of its touring capabilities, just as there will be critics who argue that the K-series café racer formula has been seen before. But to dismiss this machine misses the entire point of custom motorcycle culture.
Adam’s build is a triumph of curiosity over comfort zones. He took a heavy, complex piece of engineering, mastered it in a home garage, and emerged with a high-caliber café racer on his very first attempt. "I am a first-time builder and did all of the work in my garage," Adam says. "I love wading into an unknown field, learning all that I can, and then trying to execute on a high level." It is precisely that brave, grease-stained attitude that keeps our community moving forward, and it deserves to be celebrated.

From the seat forward this is a beautiful build. But it looks unfinished, like the backend was simply ignored. It is very unbalanced because of this. But for a first time builder it is a very good start.
